Adult Foster Care Moments

3 am, a call bell rings. A Resident is sitting up in her bed reading a book upside down. "Did you need something?" I asked.

"No, I just wanted to know if I was still alive." She responded.

Assurance and holding of her hand, she soon fell back asleep.

5am, the coughing and talking begins.  "Time to get up" she says, "Dad's in the barn, we gotta go pick berries today, is it snowing?"

The day begins. Morning cares, breakfast, radio, TV, showers, visitors, phone calls, appointments, lunch, outings, silence. We are all just one busy family embracing life.

As the day passes by, you will find our 100 year old resident playing her piano, or reading a book while others are playing dominoes or sleeping. The residents are served a home cooked meal where they visit with each other at the table and soon it will be bedtime.

The Adult Foster Care home is another option for the geriatric population that finds themselves in need of more assistance. A safe, caring environment with dignity and a sense of belonging is invaluable. The caregiver/resident ratio is 1:5 and the cost is half the price of most other options for care. Case ratios of falls are less and a resident with dementia seems to feel more relaxed in an environment with less stimulation. Having the same caregivers with a repetative routine is also a plus for the residents. We offer this alternative because we are family orientated, opening our homes and hearts to the residents.

Adult Foster Care is a licensed family setting for adults who are unable to live alone due to physical, emotional, or developmental impairments.  The home provides 24 hour care for no more than 5 functionally impaired residents.  Residents receive meals, support, supervision and assistance with personal cares and living skills as needed.

The amount providers make each month is set by the state. In addition to room and board, a difficulty of care rating is also given for each resident to determine thier monthly charge.

To become a Foster Care Provider, you have to complete the basic license requirements, and a social worker will be assigned to your home. They will visit your home to discuss your interest in Adult Foster Care, your personal history, family interests, lifestyle and types of residents for whom you would be interested in providing care for. It is also required that all Adult Foster Care providers participate in on-going training to develop and enhance their skills. A specific number of training hours are required each year. The number of hours varies depending on the number of years a provider has been licensed.
